Under reamed piling is a bored pile with one or more enlarged bulbs — the under-reams — formed along the shaft. Those bulbs act as anchors, resisting both the downward load of the structure and, just as importantly, the upward heave that expansive soils generate when they take on water during the monsoon. In and around Chennai we see this problem regularly on black cotton pockets, filled-up plots and low-lying sites where a conventional strip or pad footing simply cannot be trusted to stay level.
The method follows IS 2911 practice. We bore the shaft to the design depth, then use an under-reaming tool to widen the base into a bulb typically two to three times the shaft diameter. Where soil conditions or uplift demand it, a second bulb is formed higher up the shaft. A reinforcement cage is lowered in and the pile is concreted in place, tying into a capping beam that carries the wall or column loads above.
Under reamed piles are the economical answer for individual houses, villas, compound walls, boundary walls, water tanks, small industrial sheds and light-load structures.
